Asics Gel-Kayano 24 Men’s Running Shoe

The Gel-Kayano 24 is Asics’ latest high-performance running shoe. It is designed for stability and security, with the runner’s safety in mind. Not too flashy, but great for a serious long-distance runner.

Asics Gel-Kayano 24 Top Features

  1. Thick rubber sole, great for tough terrain or off-road running.
  2. Impact Guidance System Technology – this is Asics’ patented design, made to compliment the foot’s natural heel-toe gait and reduce impact on the rest of the body.
  3. Tough exoskeletal heel that clutches the foot for security and stabilization. Holds your foot in place while you run and prevents your heel from slipping inside the shoe.
  4. Duomax Support System – designed to perfectly balance your foot and support your arch, without sacrificing comfort.
  5. Fluidride Midsole provides just enough cushion in each stride

First Impression

I was first attracted to the Gel-Kayano 24 because I do a lot of trail and rough terrain running, and I am worried about protecting my knees and ankles. I did have a tough time breaking in these shoes when I first got them – but once I got comfortable in them it was well worth it. These are stability shoes, meaning they are designed to hold your foot steady and protect your joints while you are running. They reduce the impact of every step, which really makes all the difference on a long-distance run.

The material is surprisingly breathable and holds up under any conditions – no problem running in the rain or mud. The grip on the heel of the shoe makes it very supportive and snug without being too stiff. The midsole unit really absorbs the shock of every step, making for a balanced stride. That said, the midsole unit can also be annoying – it was one of the reasons I had such a tough time breaking the shoe in. While it is great for long runs it is not super comfortable to walk around on for long periods of time – I would not recommend wearing these shoes on a normal outing.

I have to admit, I was not crazy about the look of the Gel-Kayano 24. They are very plain-looking – but for a shoe you are only wearing on trail runs, that is not much of an issue.

Pros

  • Snug, tight fit that isn’t too suffocating
  • Cushioning midsole absorbs shock and provides balance
  • Stable, secure fit in the heel
  • Thick rubber sole for long-term durability running outdoors
  • Good for the joints, designed to prevent injuries
  • Best pair of shoes for plantar fasciitis

Cons

  • A little heavy, especially compared to road running models
  • Midsole unit can be uncomfortable in everyday use
  • Drab appearance
  • A little on the pricey side, compared to other running shoes

The Final Verdict

I would not recommend these shoes for someone who does mostly road or track running. They are incredibly stable and durable, but that all comes at the cost of being a little heavier. For someone who needs a pair of shoes for plantar fasciitis, this should be a very good pick. To be fair, they are lighter than other heavy-duty trail runners I have owned – but still heavy. There is also a little stiffness with the heel support and midsole unit that take some getting used to.

I have seen some critiques saying that the Gel-Kayano 24 is too expensive, but I am inclined to disagree. These shoes are designed to prevent injuries, which, in the long run, can save you tons of money and pain. They are also extremely durable; a pair will last you years of long distance runs in all kinds of weather. They may be more expensive at the outset, but in the end, you get the quality you pay for.

If appearance matters, the Gel-Kayano 24 takes a hit compared to others. They are not as sleek as Nikes or Adidas – but a less-flashy shoe might also be exactly what you are looking for. Anyway, when it comes to a stability shoe, quality takes precedence over looks.

My final vote on the Gel-Kayano 24 is a yes. They are comfortable, cushioning, and most importantly of all, supportive. While they can feel a little heavy and stiff at first, it is worth the effort to break them in and get comfortable in them. I would highly recommend these shoes to anyone who does a lot of terrain running and wants to reduce the impact on their bodies.
